Tornado Stores Management System

GE was selected by Panavia to provide the Stores Management System (SMS) on the Tornado.

The Tornado Aircraft SMS Unit contains:

  • Weapons Programming Unit (WPU 90) - The main computer of the SMS. A completely dual redundant computer for safety critical inventory and release of all weapons.
  • Pylon Decoder Unit (PDU 90) - Controls release of weapons and missiles
  • Weapons Officer Weapons Control Panel (WCP-1) - For the weapons officer. An alpha numeric display 12 lines by 20 characters with soft keys to program the WPU.
  • Pilots Weapons Control Panel (WCP-2) - For control of Air-to-Air missiles and Guns.
  • Inervallgeber (IVG) - Controls the release of bomblets.
  • Air-to-Air Missile Control Unit (AAMU): Controls launch of Sidewinder missiles.
  • Gun Electronic Unit (GEU) - Controls the 27 mm cannon on the aircraft

GE developed the SMS, the Air-to-Air Missile System and the IVG for this aircraft.
